For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
- Ephesians 2:8 – 9
If grace is what God gives, faith is what we do to receive God’s gift of grace and faith isn’t all that complicated. Essentially, faith is taking God at his word and placing your life in his hands.
The picture that comes to mind when I think of faith, is a good dad carrying his child. Have you ever seen a dad carrying his son or daughter? It is a great picture of faith because the dad is doing all the heavy lifting but the child has also done something significant. What has the child done? The child has placed his life in his father’s hands and has decided to rest on his dad’s shoulder.
This is a picture of faith. Faith is placing your whole life in God’s hands. Faith is resting not in your strength but in God’s strength. Faith is relying not in who you are or what you can do but in who God is and what he has done for you and he has done everything for you in Jesus. You see Christianity is not about the sacrifice we make, but the sacrifice we trust. So today make sure place your whole life in Jesus’ hands and rest in his grace.
Often we find ourselves trying to earn God’s grace instead of living a life of faith. In what ways do you try to earn God’s grace? What do you miss when you try to earn God’s grace?
