If so you probably know what it feels like to feel like you don’t have the power to change what needs to change. It’s like you can see so clearly what needs to happen but you’re not sure you’ve got what it takes to make it happen. Or even if you do have what it takes you wonder if things can really change.
Just yesterday I got a text from my sister who just got offered a huge opportunity to change some pretty significant companies in New York and she’s wondering if she’s got what it takes. She does, but whenever we’re faced with a challenge we wonder if we’ve got enough to bring about the change we hope to see.
So here is something I’ve been reflecting on lately. In Philippians 4:13 a guy named Paul says, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’
Honestly, for a long time I thought Paul was using a hyperbole to motivate us into action. But I don’t think that anymore. I think he’s dead serious. I think Paul actually thinks he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to because the same God who created this world is in his corner fighting with him and for him.
So my new mantra is this: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
I realize I’m plagiarizing from Paul, but he’s dead and even if he were alive, I don’t think he’d mind. Additionally, Paul plagiarized from God. So I’m just following suit.
Now here is why I started believing this truth and making it my personal motto.
This past week I spent some time with some of the best people in the world. They are fun, inspirational, and full of hope. Additionally they really believe that they can change the world – that they can link arms with God and make a difference. So they are doing it. Literally they are changing the world, adopting kids, drilling wells, feeding the hungry, taking care of the sick, starting beautiful companies, creating breathtaking art, recusing women in poverty, telling a better story.
And in the telling of their stories it hit me. These people really believe that they can do all things through Christ who strengthens them. And their belief isn’t just intellectual. Meaning it isn’t just a nice idea. It’s practical. It’s something they live and in living this belief they are changing the world.
These people challenged me to believe and to take action.
So, no more sitting back wondering if I have what it takes to be a dad, pastor, or husband. No more feeling sorry. I’ve got God on my team, so time to role up my sleeves and get to work.
Can you imagine if we all did this? If we didn’t worry if we had enough to change what needs to be changed. If we didn’t worry that things can’t change but instead we believed that God was on our side and he would strengthen us for the work in front of us. So we moved out beyond the breakers, beyond the comfortable and threw ourselves in.
I’ll tell you what, the things that need to change would change. Because we really can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
So here is what I wrote back to my sister after she sent me her text about her fear over her new oppertunites: You Can Do It!!
I’d write the same to you too.
Now go and change what needs to change in your world. And in your moments of doubt remember, God is with you, so you can do all thing through him!
