You Are Loved

YOU ARE LOVED

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  • John 3:16 – 17

Do you realize that you have never lived a loveless day?  Jesus’ entrance into our world is God’s great declaration and demonstration that he is bent on loving you.

And I should point this out.  God isn’t ignorant.  He doesn’t love you because he doesn’t know who you are or what you’ve done.

He knows all that you’ve done.  He knows all that you are going to do.  He knows all that you want to do and yet in spite of all the information that would lead him away from you, God so loves you.

God’s love has often left me scratching my head.  Honestly when I read about God’s love in places like John 3:16 , I kind of want to sit God down for a chat.

I imagine the conversation going a bit like this.

Me:  God don’t you know not to love people like me?  God don’t you know that if you love me, it’s going to cost you?  Don’t you realize I’m going to turn our back on you?  Don’t you know that I will stumble and fall?  Don’t you know that I will never appreciate or reciprocate fully?

God:  I know all of this but I love you, so I put together a plan to save you.

And so as an explosion of devotion God sent Jesus into the world to die in our place and for our sins, so that if we believe in Jesus we might be embraced, loved and forgiven by God.

I know this all seems a bit illogical.  But can I tell you what is more illogical.  It is more illogical to refuse God’s love or to walk through this life as if you are unloved.  So as you gear up for today make a commitment to live, worship and rest as one who is so loved.

Reflection:

How does knowing that you are already so loved by God change your life today?  How does God’s love for you empower you to love God and other people?
